Surgery for pancreatic cancer
What is pancreatic cancer?
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most serious of cancers. It develops when cancerous cells form in the tissues of the pancreas – a large organ that lies horizontally behind the lower part of your stomach. Your pancreas secretes enzymes that aid digestion and hormones that help regulate the metabolism of carbohydrates.
Pancreatic cancer spreads rapidly and
is rarely detected in its early stages, which is a major reason why it is a leading cause of cancer death. Signs and symptoms may not appear until the disease is very advanced. Right now, the cancer may have spread to other parts of the body and surgical removal is not possible.
What causes
pancreatic cancer?
We still do not know exactly what causes most cases of pancreatic cancer. Several risk factors have been linked to the disease. A risk factor is something that affects a person’s chances of contracting a disease like cancer. Some risk factors such as smoking, can be controlled. Others, such as the age of a person or race, can not be changed. But keep in mind that having one or more risk factors does not mean that a person will develop the disease.
Signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic cancer is often called a “silent” disease because it is usually no symptoms at first. Cancer can develop and spread for some time before symptoms develop, which can be so vague that they are first ignored. For these reasons, pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect early. In many cases, the cancer has spread outside the pancreas by the time it is. When symptoms appear, type and severity depends on the location and size of the tumor.
TREATMENT
pancreatic cancer in India
1. Surgery.
2. Radiation protection. 3. Chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer. 4. The operations include the Whipple resection, distal pancreatectomy, total pancreatectomy and portal vein surgery. Whipple procedure
Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy) is the most common operation in case of pancreatic cancer and can be used to treat other cancers such as cancer of the small intestine. Surgeons remove the head of the pancreas, most of the duodenum (part of the small intestine), a portion of the bile duct and sometimes part of the stomach. After pancreaticoduodenectomy, the surgeon reconstructs the digestive tract. Patients leave the hospital within an average of 14 days.
Distal Pancreatectomy
This illustration shows a pancreatic tumor in the body of the pancreas.
After mobilization of the spleen and body and tail of the pancreas, the pancreas is divided and the body, tail, tumor and spleen are removed. This is done to remove tumors in the body and tail of the pancreas. The tail of the pancreas can be removed with the main part of the organ left intact. This procedure eliminates the need for surgical reconstruction. Total pancreatectomy
This procedure is rarely performed today because throughout the adverse effects may result. In this operation, surgeons remove the entire pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder and spleen, and possibly portions of the intestine, stomach, small and neighboring nodes
Portal vein removal
Most doctors consider
inoperable pancreatic cancer if the tumor is attached to the portal vein. We partner hospital in India is one of the few medical centers in India that provides for the removal and reconstruction of the portal vein itself. The ability to perform this procedure allows a greater percentage of patients with pancreatic cancer to have a potentially curative operation.
